Drew Pomeranz produced a great outing in his first start of the year yesterday, and the Red Sox were able to score some late runs to coast to a comfortable 8-1 win against Dylan Bundy and the Orioles.
Tonight we will have knuckle-baller Steven Wright facing off against Ubaldo Jimenez for the second game of the series at Fenway Park.
The Red Sox have seen a lot of Ubaldo Jimenez over the years and they have achieved a lot of success during those encounters. Overall, Jimenez is 2-6 with a 6.82 ERA in 14 career starts against Boston. Half of those starts have come at Fenway, in which he has gone 1-3 with a 6.09 ERA.
As the numbers clearly indicate, Ubaldo Jimenez has not enjoyed success against the Red Sox. On the other hand, while Steven Wright has not had nearly as much exposure to the Orioles, he has had quality outings in each of his appearances. Wright is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in 22 innings against Baltimore for his career (2 starts and 2 relief appearances). He has been a better pitcher on the road than at home, however, only posting a mediocre 4.05 ERA at Fenway Park against all opponents over his career.
With all that said, the key stat for me in this game is that Steven Wright is 12-0 in his 16 starts that the Red Sox have scored 6 or more runs.
Facing a pitcher in Ubaldo Jimenez, and coming off an 8 run night, I think it is safe to say that the Sox have a great chance of putting up a 6 spot. Last night they were able to wait out Dylan Bundy (who had a solid outing and has looked good so far early this season) and really pound the bullpen. Look for them to tag the bullpen for a few more runs tonight after they’ve already handed Ubaldo a beating.
My pick for this game is Red Sox ML at -130
